Appetizing Events: A Feast Inspired By Flushing, Queen’s Chinatown

As Brooklynites, we rarely visit Flushing, Queens because of its distance. Queens is known for its authentic, ethnic cuisines mostly from Greece, China, Thailand and India. When we heard of an upcoming’s dinner inspired by Chinatown in Flushing, Queens, we signed up. After all, the dinner date was a few days before the Chinese New Year.

The Feast Inspired By Flushing’s Chinatown was prepared in Chef Sung K. Kim of Brooklyn Belly’s home. We sat around a large dinner table simply drinking Pabst Blue Ribbon Beer, and she shared shots of her favorite Rye Whiskey. The first course was fragrant cumin scented lamb skewers. The second course was a light and crispy salad with various spices, flavors and textures. The transparent strips of gelatinous mung bean jelly at the bottom of the plate was a cooling contrast to the spiciness of a salad made with cilantro and thinly sliced fresh vegetables. My tongue burned, but the flavors of the salad were worth every bite. Her Pork Wonton in Red Chili Sauce was truly a fragrant and beautiful dish. When Chef Sung served the Five Spices Duck Buns, no one talked. Silence is a positive sign of a truly delightful dish, in which every bite is savored. The bread bun was soft and sweet. The seared duck meat with the five-spice sauce was succulent. That wasn’t the final course, for a Sichuan Noodle Soup with Pawns immediately followed it. Cardamon and star anise contributed to the complexity of the rich broth. Dessert was Hot Pearly Chai Toddy made with Thai red tea. It was the perfect ending to a thoughtfully created feast.

Chef Sung K. Kim of Brooklyn Belly is a personal chef to many private New York City homes. Her culinary background includes The French Culinary Institute and many award-winning restaurants. She was born in Seoul, Korea and grew up in Northern Virginia. Besides hosting dinners with at her personal kitchen table, she’s also co-writing a cookbook. Learn more about her services at

Dinner Party Guests organized Chef Sung’s feast. It’s not a secret supper club with difficult riddles or secret handshakes. They offer various dinners with unique culinary experiences. As we waited between courses, we shared ideas for dinner themes with the founders, David and Matt. A few days after the Feast Inspired By Flushing’s Chinatown dinner, added more events, including another dinner by Chef Sung K. Kim: Singles Mingle, Italian Style!
