I need a break from the news. It’s emotionally draining, upsetting and people are either insensitive, forgetful and/or arrogant. I mean… there’s a rage growing inside of me. As this piece is being written, I’m finishing reading, The Warmth of Other Suns, by Isabel Wilkerson. It tells the story of the Jim Crow laws at the turn of the 20th century through the history of three people who left the south to pursue a better life in Northern cities and on the West coast. It explains how history created present day wealth gaps and how racism has evolved. Between this beautifully written historical book and today’s news, it makes me wanna scream.

Wonderful Super Herbal Tea
Each time I receive a tea collection from The Republic of Tea, I’ve noticed how it’s an undercurrent reflection of my life. When the first shipment of arrived, I’ve just used the last green tea bag only to come home to a box of Green, Ginger Peach, and Orange Blossom teas outside my apartment door. The second shipment, Matcha Green Tea, arrived during March when fresh green blades of grass and tulips were fighting their way through the snow, and the weather was still brisk. When I brought a gym membership to return to working out, the next shipment included their Be Active tea collection. And, the arrival of their easy to make iced teas in the fifth shipment clearly reminded me Summer was around the corner. This month, The Republic of Tea’s new SuperHerb™ Teas are a welcome and needed cup. Read more
It’s Naptime
The doctor’s orders are to rest, take it easy and walk around just a little. My parents have firmly told me not to cook. The boyfriend brought strawberries. There’s fresh cream in the refrigerator. My girlfriend seriously asked me what are my plans tonight. I told her I was going to dance the night away and have a few drinks. I wish. Strawberry Shortcake will cure me through this month of being off my feet. Read more
Can Spring Come to My Street?
Can sunny days sweep the clouds away on the way to where the air is sweet? I’m thinking about sunny days to the tune of Sesame Street’s theme song. The few warm days we’re granted this Spring are greeted with relief only to be disappointed with cooler days to follow. As May is coming to an end without a sign of consistent warm weather, at least rhubarb arrived on time for an upside-down cornmeal cake. Read more
Seafood on My Mind
There’s seafood on my mind. Crawfish. Oysters. Crab. Scallops. Shrimp. Hopefully lobster. All seasoned with Southern spices and lure. I’m thinking of creole dirty rice. French cooking techniques mixed Southern flavors. Spicy red beans and rice. Gumbo seasoned with filé. Jazz music inspired from my Motherland. Warm weather on the gulf coast. Why? I’m going to New Orleans. It’s my first time. The trip is sponsored by The Gulf Seafood Marketing Coalition. Besides enjoying my favorite cuisine (on location), I’m learning how the seafood industry is moving on after a disastrous oil spill. Read more
