Hodgson Mill asked MyLifeRunsOnFood.com to compete in their Build a Better Pizza contest. My response was an happy ‘YES,’ because I love creating pizza with unusual flavors (see Yellow Beet and Parsnip Wheat Pizza, Sweet Potato, Caramelized Shallots, Smoked Mozzarella Pizza with Wilted Arugula, NY Autumn Apple Prosciutto Pizza and Zucchini Tomato Ricotta Pizza. Homemade pizza is more fun and healthier than having a greasy pie delivered to my front door. The only difficulty was the requirement for making a crust with 50% whole-wheat flour. Plum Cardamon Chicken Wings

What to do with plums left over from those last days of summer? I wouldn’t recommend serving them fresh, because they’re not quite their best anymore. However, here’s a sauce making best use of those late season, mealy plums for chicken wings or using as a dip for French fries. Where to serve them? It’s the start of another football season, and sports parties always have chicken wings. Meanwhile, my excitement for fall is because of the new television shows. Quick Buttermilk Walnut Bread

Autumn is supposed to be a depressing time of year, but today my feelings are different from a few seasons ago. I feel happy. Blessed. In the words of James Brown, “ I Feeeeeel Goooood.” This morning we woke up to a warm and crisp day. The boyfriend and I danced to Tina Turner, Jackie Wilson, Stevie Wonder and classic R&B hits from the past. Buttermilk Pancakes were served with walnuts and figs. Vanilla milk was swirled into French Press coffee. As our food slowly digest, we caught the last end of the second Wall Street movie on television. After a busy summer of my boyfriend’s debut on Broadway and me finally getting a job, we finally relaxed on this Saturday morning, the first day fall. Read more →

Hummingbird Cake with Mascarpone Frosting

I remember the first time seeing a moist three-layered cake flavored with juicy pineapples and bananas with rich cream cheese frosting elegantly displayed in a glass cake dish of my childhood home. Since then, a few slices have been enjoyed, but few people know about the ‘Other Great Southern Dessert,’ Hummingbird Cake. Red Velvet cake receives more attention. Plum Buttermilk Ice Cream

Bless his heart. Now that I’m working, my boyfriend is taking over a few household chores, including light grocery shopping. He mostly buys drinks, which are too heavy for me to carry home (In New York, grocery shopping is done in increments, a cab is hailed or the store has delivery service).
